Why I Started Garden Haven Blog
Growing up in Portland, OR, I was always surrounded by nature. My parents had this tiny veggie patch out back, and as a little girl, I loved helping them plant seeds. There's something magical about getting your hands dirty, watching those seedlings turn into thriving plants, and then tasting the fresh veggies we'd grown together. But it took me a while to really get what all that organic gardening magic was about.
The Moment That Changed Everything
In 2015, my husband and I bought our first home—a charming fixer-upper with this huge backyard. Right away, I knew I wanted to turn it into a beautiful garden space. Sure, I had some basics from helping my parents, but I was eager to dive deeper into organic gardening. So in January 2016, I started planning out what I'd plant come spring.
That first spring, after lots of research and prep, I planted my very first vegetable garden. Rows of carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and even some zucchini for good measure. But as the weeks went by, something was off...I wasn't seeing that lush growth I'd dreamed about.
One afternoon, I noticed my tomato plants were looking all yellow and wilted. Panicked, I turned to Google. After a few minutes of searching, I found out they had late blight—a fungal disease that can really mess things up if not treated right. Sadly, it was too late to save them.
This setback left me feeling pretty defeated and overwhelmed. I wondered if I'd ever be able to grow a thriving organic veggie garden. But instead of giving up, I decided to learn from my mistakes and try again the next year.
The Steps I Took
That winter, I dove into everything I could find on organic gardening. I joined local forums, attended workshops at our neighborhood nursery, and even started volunteering at a community garden. By April 2017, I was ready to give it another go.
The first big change I made was focusing on soil health. You know, every expert starts as a beginner. So I spent some time learning about composting, mulching, and the benefits of cover crops (even in an urban setting). I also picked up some basic tools like a trowel, pruners, and a good-quality hose.
I decided to start small this time. Instead of filling my whole garden with veggies, I chose just a few varieties that would thrive in Portland's climate: lettuce, spinach, peas, and radishes for the spring, and tomatoes, cucumbers, and zucchini for summer. This way, I could give each plant the care it needed without feeling overwhelmed.
Throughout the growing season, I kept detailed notes on what worked and what didn't. For example, I learned that succession planting—where you sow seeds or transplant seedlings in intervals—was key to maximizing my harvest all year long.
What I Learned
By the end of 2017, I was totally hooked on organic gardening. My garden was thriving, and I felt this amazing sense of accomplishment that went way beyond just growing veggies. There were so many lessons:
The biggest one? Failure is a crucial part of learning. It's through trial and error that we gain knowledge and experience.
Another big takeaway was the importance of patience. Gardening isn't something you can rush; it takes time, care, and attention to detail.
I also found joy in connecting with other gardeners—sharing tips, swapping seeds, and learning from each other's experiences. It's amazing how much you can learn just by chatting with someone who shares your passion.
The Birth of Garden Haven Blog
As my gardening skills improved, I started wanting to share what I'd learned with others. So in the fall of 2018, I decided to start a blog—a place where I could document my journey, offer tips and advice, and connect with fellow gardeners from all over.
I chose the name "Garden Haven Blog" because it reflects my vision for a peaceful, nurturing space where anyone can come to learn about organic veggie gardening. My hope is that this blog will inspire others to get their hands dirty, try new things, and experience the joy of growing their own food.
